Very few patients wanted to "fight to the end" and keep getting tests and aggressive treatments that would only have a chance of prolonging the inevitable by a few days, if at all. I found that the hospital, while full of hurried staff and sick patients, can be a lonely, disruptive, and uncomfortable place to spend the last days of one's life.
